If you plan to start a business or any form of organization, you probably need to understand this fact before you go further. Those who are already in business may have experienced what I am going to explain in this post.

Customers are 'selfish', yes they are really selfish. Customers are the people you are going to serve, you depend on them to realize the goals you have for your establishment.

The fact that your goods or services may be attractive and useful doesn't make the customers stay with your business forever.  As I said, they are selfish, they want maximum benefit, and they want it all the time.

If they don't get what they need, if they don't get it constantly, they will leave you. They don't consider how bad you will feel, they don't consider how terrible your organization will be when they leave you.

When they stay with you it's not that because they care about you, it is not that they want to see you grow, it is because they are benefiting or sometimes it is just because they have not found your substitute.

This is why Business is very difficult. In business it is not about gaining profit this year, it is about making the customers happy, it is about understanding them, it is about being unsubstitutable by your customers.

This selfishness of customers require organizations constantly change as technology, economic and social factors change because if the organizations remain static, customers who are selfish will look for their substitution.

Some products or organizations are easily substituted, some take long time to be substituted, and some remain strong.

However, businesses have the chance of having what we call Loyal Customers. I refer these as those customers who will have their second thought about the business when things are hard before they leave. They will try to stay with the business, even convince others to stay. They have hope and trust.

So, if you are doing business (be it music, blogging, catering, selling clothes, software, IT solutions, cars, etc) or you just want to start, remember this. Don't be carried away by success in your business, continue to be better and better, because the same customers who made you successful, may just leave you any time, without notice!

In some cases, you should be selfish too, understand better your customers and choose who among your customers you want to remain with!
