New Tablet From Microsoft

"The surface is a PC. It is a tablet." - Steve Ballmer (CEO, Microsoft)

We used to buy laptops and PC computers from Original Equipment Manufacturers ( OEMs) which are packed with windows operating software, but things are getting better and better now.

The giant software manufacture Microsoft has announced this week - on June 18, 2012 a new computer tablet wholly produced by its engineers. The company calls the new tablet - "Microsoft Surface".

There is no yet official price and distribution details, but what is revealed is the tablet's specifications including the fact that the tablet will use the latest windows version- Windows 8. The tablet weights 1.5 pounds and is 9 millimeters thick. The tablet will be available with 32 or 64 GB of memory, whereas the more powerful ones will be configured with 64 or 128 GB.

This is not the first time Microsoft to attempt to produce computer hardware. Currently Microsoft produces its own mice and keyboard, and had tried to produce mobile device ZUNE - to compete with ipad, but Microsoft failed and decided to discontinue this product. (ABC NEWS).

Microsoft is entering the tablet market which is currently dominated by Apple and Sumsung. Other tablet manufacturers making a top ten list include HP, Blackberry, Motorola, Acer, Sony, LG, HTC, Toshiba. (ALLTOPLIST.COM)

In business strategy management, we say Microsoft is "jockeying for position" in the tablet business. It has identified an opportunity in the industry which according to expert Alex Daley of Casey Research, is just two years old.

We are waiting to hear pricing and distribution strategies for Microsoft Surface to find out what it means for the competitive industry of tablet. Until then, we learn from Microsoft story:
  • Failure in business is common, but we must stand up and come up with strong products and do our best
  • In business there is always a need to study your environment, see opportunities, measure yourself if you can go for those opportunities.
